If you own an inflatable paddleboard, a split seam is one of the most stressful things that can happen to it. One minute you’re pumping it up for a day on the water, the next you hear a pop and see a split opening up along the seam. That’s exactly what happened to one of our Tahe 10’6 BEACH SUP-Yak boards, and in this guide I’ll walk you through exactly how I fixed it.
We’ve had our two Tahe boards for about five years now, and they’ve genuinely never let us down. On this occasion, though, we made a rookie mistake. We pumped one of the boards up to its max capacity and then left it sitting in direct, hot sun. As the air inside expanded in the heat, the pressure became too much for the seam to handle, and it split. The tear was only around 15cm long, but it was enough to put the board out of action until it was repaired.

Rather than pay for professional paddle board repairs, or start hunting for a paddle board repair shop (and paying to send a bulky inflatable board off in a box), I decided to do the repair myself. I spent a good few hours researching the best approach, watching repair videos and reading through Tahe’s own guidance, before settling on a method and materials I was confident in. I’m glad I did, because the repair has held perfectly. You genuinely wouldn’t know the board had ever split. And it will only cost you in the region of £30.
Is a Split Seam Worth Repairing Yourself?
Before you write your board off, it’s worth knowing that a split seam is one of the more repairable problems an inflatable SUP can have. Unlike a puncture through the deck, a seam split is a bonding failure between two edges of vinyl that were glued together at the factory. In principle, you’re just re-doing that original bond, and if you do it properly, the repair can end up just as strong as the seam was in the first place.

A few things are worth checking before you start:
- How long is the split? A small seam split, like the 15cm one I had, is a very manageable DIY job.
- Is the rest of the board sound? Give it a full inspection for any other splits, scuffs, or weak spots before you commit to a repair.
- Can you get a clamp on it? Seam splits usually run along the rail of the board, which makes them easier to clamp flat than a repair in the middle of the deck.
If you’re dealing with multiple splits, a badly damaged seam, or you’re just not confident working with vinyl cement, it’s worth speaking to a proper inflatable paddleboard repair service instead. But for a single, clean split like mine, this is a job you can absolutely do at home.
Why I Chose HH-66 Vinyl Cement
Most SUP brands, Tahe included, supply a small repair kit with the board that includes a patch of material and some sandpaper. What they don’t include is the glue itself. This isn’t an oversight. Strong vinyl adhesives typically contain solvents that are restricted under EU regulations for shipping and retail, so manufacturers leave you to source the glue locally.

After comparing a few options, I went with HH-66 Vinyl Cement (Toluene Free). A few reasons this came out on top for a paddleboard seam repair:
- It’s specifically designed to bond PVC and vinyl, which is exactly what your SUP’s outer skin is made from.
- It cures to a bond that stays flexible rather than going brittle, which matters on a board that’s going to flex every time you inflate it, load it up, or drop it on the beach.
- It’s waterproof once cured, and rated to cope with a wide temperature range, so it holds up whether the board’s baking on a beach in July or getting rinsed off afterwards.
- The toluene-free version does everything the original formula does, just without the stronger, more toxic solvent, which makes it a lot more pleasant to use in a garage or garden.

Materials I Used
You don’t need a huge kit for this job, and most of it is available online or from a chandlery. Here’s exactly what I used:
- HH-66 Vinyl Cement (Toluene Free)
- Methylated spirit, for cleaning the vinyl
- A clean cloth
- Four or five F-clamps (I purchased a set of 4 for under £15 on Amazon here)
- A couple of strips of wood
- 180 grit sandpaper
- Paper towel
- A small wooden spatula, for spreading the glue

A couple of the “materials” on my list are a bit unconventional. I found the easiest way to apply the glue into every nook and cranny of the split was with a small wooden fork from the chip shop, along with a wooden skewer for really working it into the tight spots. Don’t overthink this part. Anything disposable, narrow, and rigid enough to push glue into a seam will do the job.
Step-by-Step: How to Repair a Split Seam on an Inflatable SUP
1. Inspect the Damage Thoroughly

Before touching any glue, give the whole board a proper once-over. Check the rest of the seams and the deck for any other splits, weak patches, or signs of wear. There’s no point doing a beautiful repair on one split only to find another one appears a week later.
2. Check Inside the Split

Gently lift the edges of the split apart and look inside. You want to make sure the internal drop-stitch threads, the fine strings that hold the top and bottom of the board together and give it its rigidity when inflated, aren’t visible or damaged. If they are, that’s a more serious repair and might be one to send to a specialist.
3. Clean the Area

Using methylated spirit (or another alcohol-based cleaner) and a cloth, clean both sides of the vinyl inside the split thoroughly. Any dirt, salt, or oil left on the surface will stop the glue from bonding properly, so don’t rush this step.
4. Lightly Sand the Surface

Take your 180 grit sandpaper and lightly scuff the inside surfaces of the split. You’re not trying to sand through the vinyl, just knock back the glossy factory finish so the glue has something to key into. Wipe away all the dust and debris, then clean the area again with methylated spirit.
5. Apply the Glue

Using your spatula, apply a generous, even layer of HH-66 to both sides of the split. This is where that wooden fork or skewer comes in handy, working the glue right into every nook and cranny along the tear so there are no gaps left unbonded.
6. Let the Glue Go Tacky

Leave the glue for about two to five minutes to go tacky. This is a genuinely important step. Press the seam together too early, while the glue is still wet, and you’ll get a much weaker bond.
7. Press the Seam Together

Once tacky, gently press the two sides of the split together by hand, working along its length to line everything up evenly.
8. Clamp It Flat and Leave to Cure

Lay the board on a strong, flat surface. I used a scaffold board for this, but a workbench or similar would work just as well. Place your strips of wood over the repaired seam to spread the pressure evenly, then attach your F-clamps one by one along the length of the repair, tightening each in turn.
I have several F-clamps which were perfect for this, and left mine clamped up for around six hours. Even once you remove the clamps, HH-66 needs a full 24 hours to reach its maximum strength, so try to leave the board alone during that time.
9. Test at Low Pressure

Once the glue has cured, gently inflate the board to around 3 PSI (mine is rated to around 12 PSI at full pressure). This lets you check the repair under some load without putting it under full strain straight away. I left the board for 24 hours to see if the board deflated or lost pressure. It didn’t!
10. Check for Movement and Leaks
Inspect the repaired seam closely for any movement or separation, and check the rest of the board while you’re at it, just in case anything else has developed a slow leak. You can use a wet sponge with soapy water to check all the seams for bubbles.
11. Full Inflation and Final Test
After a couple of days, inflate the board fully and give it a proper test before taking it back out on the water. This waiting period gives the glue the best possible chance to reach full strength before it’s put under real-world pressure.
The Result
The repair has held up perfectly. There’s no sign of movement in the seam, no slow leaks, and honestly, unless you knew exactly where to look, you’d never guess that board had split open in the sun. It’s back in regular use and holding pressure just as well as our other board.
Final Thoughts
A split seam looks worse than it is. With the right glue, a bit of patience over the clamping and curing times, and a methodical approach to cleaning and preparing the vinyl, this is a genuinely achievable DIY repair rather than something that needs an expensive paddleboard repair shop.
