If you have ever walked into your bathroom and spotted mould creeping across the ceiling again, you’ll know how frustrating it can be. One of my recent customers had exactly that problem. Despite repainting the ceiling and upgrading to a more powerful extractor fan, moisture was still causing peeling paint and stubborn mould patches.
That’s when they contacted Handyman Ben to install PVC ceiling panels as a long-term solution.
After completing the job, I can honestly say this is one of the most practical bathroom upgrades for homes struggling with condensation. The finished ceiling now has a clean gloss white finish; it wipes down easily, and there’s no painted surface left for moisture to attack. Sometimes the simplest fixes are the best ones.
Why Choose PVC Ceiling Panels for a Bathroom?
Bathrooms naturally produce a huge amount of moisture. Hot showers, poor airflow, and older painted ceilings are often a recipe for peeling paint and mould growth.
PVC ceiling panels solve this problem because they create a water-resistant surface that does not absorb moisture like plaster and paint do.
Here are some of the benefits:
- Easy wipe-clean finish
- Moisture resistant
- Helps reduce mould growth
- Modern clean appearance
- Quicker than replastering and repainting
- Low maintenance
- Affordable bathroom upgrade
For this particular project, the customer mainly wanted something practical and long-lasting. They were tired of repainting every year, which is completely understandable.

Materials Used for This Bathroom Ceiling Project
For this installation, I used:
- Gloss White Twin Embedded PVC Ceiling Panels
250mm Wide x 2600mm Long x 8mm Thick - EVO-STIK Sticks Like Sh*t Adhesive
- White silicone sealant
- White PVC trim
I’ve used several adhesives over the years, but EVO-STIK grabs really well for this kind of application. You definitely do not want panels sagging above your head halfway through fitting them.
Tools Needed

These are the tools I used during the installation:
- Utility knife
- Scraper
- Sandpaper and orbital sander
- Tape measure
- Pen
- Set square
- Sealant gun
One thing I always tell people is that you do not need an entire van full of expensive tools for jobs like this. Careful measuring and patience matter far more.
Bathroom Ceiling Before the Work Started
The original ceiling had:
- Peeling paint
- Damp patches
- Signs of mould
- Excess moisture damage

The extractor fan had already been upgraded previously, but the painted ceiling still struggled with condensation. In situations like this, covering the ceiling with PVC panels can often be far more effective than repeatedly repainting it.
Step-by-Step Guide to Fitting PVC Ceiling Panels
1. Remove Loose Paint and Prepare the Ceiling
The first step was scraping off all peeling paint to create a stable surface.

Any remaining loose material was sanded back using sandpaper and an orbital sander. This stage matters more than people think. If the surface underneath is flaky, the adhesive will not bond properly.
After sanding, I vacuumed and cleaned the entire area thoroughly.

2. Remove Lights and Extractor Fixtures
Before fitting the panels, I removed the bathroom light fittings and extractor fan cover.
Safety first here. Always isolate the power before working around electrical fittings. It only takes a few minutes and it’s absolutely worth doing properly.

3. Measure and Plan the Panel Layout
I measured the ceiling carefully and planned how the panels would run across the room.
Then I measured again.
And again.
Honestly, accurate measuring saves a huge amount of frustration later. PVC panels are forgiving to work with, but even small mistakes become noticeable over a full ceiling.
4. Cut the First PVC Panel
The first panel needed the edge lip removing so it could sit flush against the wall.
Using a utility knife and set square, I carefully scored and cut the panel to size.
PVC ceiling panels are actually quite straightforward to cut. A sharp blade makes all the difference.
5. Dry Fit the Panel
Before adding adhesive, I dry fitted the panel to check alignment and sizing.
This is a habit I always recommend. It’s much easier to trim a panel before adhesive goes on the back.
6. Apply Adhesive to the Back of the Panel
I applied EVO-STIK adhesive in a zig-zag pattern across the rear of the panel, adding extra adhesive around the corners.
The panel was then pushed firmly into place across the ceiling surface.
A good even bond is important here because you want the panel fully supported across its length.

7. Fit Additional Panels
The next panels were measured individually and cut to size.
Each panel slots neatly into the previous one using the tongue and groove edge. Once connected, they create a seamless waterproof finish.
I repeated the measuring, cutting, dry fitting, and fixing process across the ceiling.
This part takes patience more than skill. Rushing panel installations usually creates uneven joins or awkward gaps.
Cutting Holes for Bathroom Lights
Eventually I reached the panel containing the light fittings.

This stage included:
- Turning off the bathroom power
- Removing the light fittings
- Measuring the exact light positions
- Cutting 65mm holes using a holesaw
- Dry fitting the panel
- Applying adhesive
- Pulling cables through the holes
- Reattaching the lights
- Restoring power and testing everything
I always recommend double-checking measurements before cutting light holes. There is no magical way to uncut a hole once it’s there.
Cutting Around the Extractor Fan
The extractor fan opening was cut manually using a utility knife.

PVC panels are flexible enough that careful scoring and trimming usually works perfectly for openings like this.
Finishing the Bathroom Ceiling
Once all panels were fitted, I added:
- White silicone sealant around the perimeter
- White PVC trim for a cleaner finish
The silicone helps create a watertight seal and gives the installation a much more professional appearance.
Finally, the whole bathroom was cleaned and tidied.
How Long Did the Installation Take?
This bathroom ceiling project took approximately 6 to 8 hours to complete.
That included:
- Surface preparation
- Panel cutting
- Light fitting adjustments
- Adhesive fixing
- Sealing and finishing
Difficulty Level
I’d class this as a medium difficulty DIY project.
The actual fitting process is not overly technical, but accurate measuring and patience are essential. Most mistakes happen because people rush the preparation or measurements.
Final Thoughts on PVC Bathroom Ceiling Panels
Overall, this was a very effective solution for the customer’s moisture issues.
The bathroom now has:
- A bright modern ceiling
- A wipe-clean surface
- Improved resistance to mould and moisture
- No more peeling paint
The customer had already tried repainting and upgrading ventilation, but the issue kept returning. Installing PVC ceiling panels provided a much more permanent solution.
If your bathroom ceiling constantly suffers from condensation damage, this is definitely a project worth considering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are PVC ceiling panels waterproof?
Yes, PVC ceiling panels are highly water resistant, which makes them ideal for bathrooms and other high-moisture areas.
Can PVC ceiling panels be fitted over existing ceilings?
In many cases, yes. As long as the existing ceiling is stable and free from loose material, panels can often be bonded directly onto it.
Do PVC ceiling panels stop mould?
They help reduce mould growth because they do not absorb moisture like painted plaster ceilings. Proper ventilation is still important though.
How are PVC ceiling panels attached?
They are commonly fixed using strong adhesive and connected together with tongue and groove joints.
Can I fit PVC ceiling panels myself?
Yes, many confident DIYers can complete this project with basic tools and careful measuring. Electrical work around lights should always be approached safely.
How long do PVC ceiling panels last?
When installed correctly, PVC ceiling panels can last for many years with very little maintenance.
Are PVC ceiling panels easy to clean?
Very easy. Usually a quick wipe with a damp cloth is all that’s needed.
