A well-designed and renovated kitchen can do a lot to make dinner times and meal prep a lot easier and more efficient. However, the tools that you work with during the cooking process make a major difference, as well. If you find your knives growing dull or your tools showing signs of damage or corrosion, then you could probably put in a little more care than they’re currently receiving. Here’s how.
Clean Up Immediately After Use

One of the biggest mistakes is leaving dirty kitchen tools to linger or soak for long periods after cooking. It can be a corrosion risk for a lot of metal utensils, while knives can start to become loose in their handles, and wooden spoons can start to warp over time. Not cleaning them as soon as they’re used also increases the cross-contamination. What’s more, it’s a lot easier to simply clean them there and then rather than having to scrub off dried food later.
Keep Your Knives Sharp
Perhaps the most important tip in keeping your kitchen efficient is to make sure that you’re not letting your knives go dull. However, a sharp knife isn’t just better for precise and faster cutting, it’s also a lot safer. A dull knife means you have to apply more pressure, which increases the chances of slipping and injuring yourself. Make sure to regularly hone your blades with a whetstone or a rolling knife sharpener. Once you do, be sure to keep them dry and stored in a knife block or a magnetic strip to avoid the dulling that can happen when they’re kept with other utensils.
Pay Extra Attention To Wood Tools

Wooden kitchen tools need a lot more attention than most, and a simple rinse isn’t going to keep them food safe. Whether it’s a wooden spoon, spatula, chopping board, or otherwise, they can crack, warp, and harbour bacteria if they’re not given the right care. Wash them with mild soap, dry immediately, and never leave them soaking. Once a month, condition with food-safe mineral oil to prevent drying and splitting. Chopping boards can be sanded down and finished gently once in a while if they’re starting to show grooves from routine use, too.
Store Them Properly
As mentioned, storing some tools like knives improperly can damage them, as being crowded by utensils in a drawer can dull their edge. The same goes for other tools in your arsenal. You should keep measuring spoons, spatulas, peelers, and other tools in separate, organised containers so that they’re easy to grab. Items like mixers and food processors should be protected from dust, as well, so make sure that they’re not crowded. Proper storage reduces clutter, prevents damage, and makes your cooking flow more efficiently. Organised chefs waste less time searching and more time creating.
Taking care of your kitchen tools is going to not only make meal prep a lot easier, but it’s also going to prevent you from having to replace them as often as you do. The tips above could end up saving you both time and money.
