When we decided to renovate our home, we had no idea that artificial intelligence (AI) would become one of our most valuable design partners. From reimagining our kitchen to creating a harmonious garden layout, AI tools didn’t just make the process easier; they made it smarter.
As AI becomes more prevalent in everything from architectural planning to interior staging, it’s also becoming important to understand when and how it’s being used. That’s where AI design detection tools come in, helping professionals and homeowners alike identify AI-generated content in layouts, renderings, or even design portfolios. It adds a layer of transparency and trust in a space where digital and human creativity are increasingly intertwined. As AI continues to shape how we build and live, institutions like the Harvard Graduate School of Design are actively exploring its impact on architecture, interior spaces, and the ethics of AI-assisted creativity.
Home design has always been a blend of creativity, functionality, and personal taste. But today, thanks to AI, homeowners and professionals alike are making better decisions faster, with less guesswork and more confidence.
Our Kitchen: Designed by AI, Perfected by Us
Our kitchen renovation was where we first saw the real power of AI in design. Using tools like Planner 5D and Houzz Pro, we were able to visualise multiple layout options, compare materials, and even simulate lighting conditions throughout the day. Instead of trying to imagine how quartz countertops would look next to navy-blue cabinets, we saw lifelike renderings in real time.

What made the experience even better was the AI’s ability to suggest design optimisations. For example, the software pointed out that moving our island just six inches would improve traffic flow, a small change that made a big impact on daily usability.
We also experimented with Midjourney, a generative AI that turned our vague ideas into stunning mood boards. We typed in prompts like “modern Scandinavian kitchen with warm lighting and matte black accents,” and instantly received beautiful, inspiring visuals.
Landscaping with Logic: Our AI-Guided Garden
After the kitchen success, we tackled the garden. We turned to Yardzen, a platform that uses AI to create custom landscape designs tailored to your space, climate, and preferences. It analysed everything from sunlight patterns to soil type and local plant hardiness. Within days, we received a complete design plan, including 3D visuals and a plant-by-plant guide.

Not only did the AI help optimise for beauty, but it also emphasised sustainability, suggesting drought-tolerant plants and smart irrigation zones. The result? A gorgeous, low-maintenance garden we never could have imagined on our own.
AI Tools Making a Big Impact in Home Design
Beyond our own projects, AI is transforming the broader world of home design in profound ways:
1. AI-Powered Design Platforms
Tools like Morpholio Board and Autodesk’s Revit use AI to streamline the design process. These platforms can auto-generate floor plans, analyse spatial usage, and even propose furniture layouts based on ergonomic data.
2. Virtual Staging & Real-Time Visualisation
RoOomy and DecorMatters use AI to virtually stage rooms, letting users experiment with different styles and furnishings before committing. These platforms integrate with AR (augmented reality), so you can see how a new sofa will actually look in your living room using just your phone.
3. Smart Material & Colour Matching
AI tools like ColorSnap Visualizer (by Sherwin-Williams) and Clare’s Color Genius analyse your space and lighting to suggest the best paint colours. They take the guesswork out of colour decisions, a godsend when you’re stuck between three nearly identical shades of white.
4. Generative AI & Inspiration Engines
AI platforms like Midjourney, DALL·E, and Interior AI allow users to create highly personalised design concepts from simple text prompts. These tools are rapidly becoming a favourite among both DIYers and professionals looking for fresh, creative inspiration.
A Smarter, More Personalised Future
What impressed us most was how AI didn’t take creativity out of the process; it enhanced it. We still made all the final choices, but AI helped us understand the impact of those choices more clearly. It felt like having a personal designer, data analyst, and visualiser all rolled into one.
Home design will always require a human touch, but AI is making it more accessible, efficient, and enjoyable. Whether you’re redesigning a room or planning a whole new build, AI tools can help you dream bigger and smarter.
If you’re planning a renovation, don’t be afraid to experiment with AI. You might just be surprised by what you and your digital design assistant can create together.
